Woodchip for Equestrian Turnouts

Woodchip for Equestrian Turnouts

Using softwood woodchip for equestrian turnouts has many advantages over other coverings. Our wood chip is sourced locally from virgin, whole tree wood and is free from contaminates. Here are the main positives:

Keeps horses out of the mud

Woodchip dramatically reduces poaching and deep mud in high-traffic turnout areas. Horses can move, roll, and stand without sinking to the fetlocks, which is a gift to both legs and patience during wet months.

Better drainage, less standing water

When laid over a membrane with a suitable base, woodchip allows water to drain away rather than pool. Drier footing means fewer skin issues such as mud fever and less bacterial party life around the pasterns.

Safer footing in poor weather

Woodchip provides natural grip, even in rain or frost. It reduces slipping compared with bare clay or compacted soil, making it especially useful for excitable horses or mixed herds during winter turnout.

Kinder on joints and hooves

The slight give in woodchip absorbs concussion better than hardstanding. Horses standing or moving on it for long periods experience less strain, which is particularly valuable for older horses or those with arthritis.

Allows year-round turnout

By protecting pasture from being churned into a battlefield, woodchip turnout areas help preserve grazing for spring and summer. Horses still get turnout, fresh air, and movement without sacrificing the fields.

Flexible and scalable

Woodchip turnout pens can be:

  • Temporary or permanent
  • Expanded or reduced easily
  • Installed in awkward or heavily used areas

It adapts to the yard rather than demanding a perfect site.

Lower cost than specialist surfaces

Compared with rubber, artificial grass systems, or full concrete bases, woodchip is a more affordable way to create usable winter turnout, especially for multiple horses.

Relatively easy maintenance

Droppings are easy to spot and remove. With regular poo-picking and occasional topping up, the surface stays functional and pleasant underfoot.

More natural feel for horses

Woodchip feels closer to a natural surface than concrete or mats. Many horses settle well on it, graze hay, and rest comfortably, which matters for welfare as much as practicality.

In summary: woodchip turnout offers a horse-friendly compromise between mud and machinery. It keeps legs cleaner, fields intact, and winter turnout possible.
