Woodchip for Livestock Bedding

Woodchip for Livestock Bedding

Woodchip for Livestock Bedding

High quality woodchip is a sound and viable alternative to straw for livestock bedding.  Our wood chip is sourced locally from virgin, whole tree wood and is free from contaminates.

Here are some advantages of woodchip over straw:

Durability under pressure

Woodchip doesn’t collapse as quickly as straw. Where straw snaps and mats down into a soggy pancake, woodchip keeps its structure longer, especially in high-traffic areas like gateways, feed troughs, and loafing zones.

Advantage
Firmer footing, less churn, fewer muddy craters.

Better longevity

A bed of straw often needs frequent topping up or full replacement. Woodchip breaks down more slowly, so it can last weeks or months depending on stocking density and weather.

Advantage
Fewer bedding changes, lower labour over time.

Reduced waste volume

Because woodchip lasts longer and compacts less dramatically, you usually remove less material overall compared to straw bedding that gets fouled quickly.

Advantage
Smaller muck heaps and fewer loads to move.

Good performance outdoors

For outdoor pads, sacrifice areas, and wintering yards, woodchip sheds water better than straw and doesn’t blow away as easily.

Advantage
Drier surfaces in wet weather.

Easier composting in some systems

Woodchip mixed with manure creates a carbon-rich compost that can be useful for soil conditioning, especially when managed over longer composting cycles.

Advantage
Valuable end product rather than fast-rotting sludge.

Sustainability

Chessgrove Woodchip is an environmentally sustainable business and forms a key part of the overall sustainability strategy for the Chessgrove Park companies, providing the energy that drives them in efficient and carbon neutral manner.

A continued investment in biomass

In the last 5 years Chessgrove have invested over £1 million in an efficient, comprehensive biomass system to fuel our operations, including the supply of heating and warm water. Burning biomass is as near to carbon-neutral as any energy source, with flammable plant matter being burned to release energy in the form of heat and power.

A commitment to solar power

We further extended our commitment to the environment by introducing solar power with an investment of over £300k.  Panels were fitted to generate on average 2400kw/hr per week proving all the businesses electricity and returning surplus to the grid.

Sustainable Sources

Chessgrove only uses arboricultural waste wood and employs an in-house team to source wood that cannot be used for other purposes.

For wood chip sales we only use hardwood and softwood from local sources, and we ensure the end product does not contain contaminates.

The vehicles and machinery are modern and well serviced, ensuring a reliable and efficient service to our stakeholders.
